Palmarina Sponsors the Extreme Sailing Series

Join us for some of the best competitive sailing in the world

At Palmarina Bodrum, we believe in travel, adventure and the wonderful lifestyle that comes with living on the water. So, this year, we are sponsoring the world’s leading high-performance sailing competition. Palmarina Bodrum is an Official Supplier to the Extreme Sailing Series and an Official Partner to the Flying Phantom series.

For anyone who doesn’t know, the Extreme Sailing Series is one of the most exciting sailing championships in the world. Like Formula1, the Extreme Sailing Series brings together the best sailors and support teams to compete against one another in host cities around the world. The races take place over a weekend in a fun, festival-like atmosphere. And what makes the racing even more exciting is the boats are racing extremely close to shore. As a result, the races are easy to follow and feel part of.

While the Extreme Sailing Series features foiling carbon GC32 catamarans with a crew of five, the Flying Phantoms are a mini version of the same design, with a crew of 2. Both series run over the same weekends in each event.

For us at Palmarina, these races are part of who we are. We first supported the Extreme Sailing Series when it raced in Istanbul in 2014, and we’re hoping through our involvement to see this dynamic and exhilarating sporting competition return to Turkey in the near future.
The Races
Since we kicked off our sponsorship, we’ve attended the races in Madeira, Barcelona and Hamburg. At each venue, there’s a race village along the shore in port, creating a stadium-like atmosphere for spectators. There’s food, music, Land Rover test drives (Land Rover are one of the Series sponsors) merchandise and big screens with anchor commentary keeping the fans up to speed with the day’s racing.

The teams are made up of some of the best racing sailors in the world. There are America’s Cup winners, Olympic medal-winners and champions from the four corners of the globe. In Barcelona, two of the team captains had returned to sail the waters they’d raced each other in the 1992 Summer Olympics.

And then, there’s the style of the sailing. These boats fly. Or rather, they foil. It’s a relatively recent development in sailing technology that’s happened because of carbon construction. Hydrofoil sailing has changed the dynamics of a boat’s relationship to the water and the wind. It’s faster, more exciting and because the boats are so much smaller and lighter, it means they can race inshore, often within just metres of the spectators.

It’s not just catamarans, either: The French yacht builder Beneteau have recently been spotted sea-trialling Figaro 3, a foiling monohull. Small foiling boats are also available to purchase for the weekend or sailing club enthusiast: The Flo1 from Aeronamics and the Flying Phantom
